Multi level parking lots like this are normally depressing things. Especially in this weather. Open walls to let the light in to these dreary things also let the rain in on dull, stormy days like this. Three times, Rachel had stepped in a puddle on this level alone. The fourth level was normally a quiet level and today was no different. Only a handful of cars took a place on this level. Most likely these are owned by those that staff the stores below. The far corner of the lot was the busiest. That’s where Rachel was heading to. One more puddle stepped in.
“Probably more water in here than the river at the bottom of the hill.” joked the coroner as Rachel approached
“Maybe so Dave, maybe so. So what have we got?”
“Late thirties male. No wedding ring. No phone no noticeable I.D.”
“Nothing to go on?”
“The logo on the victim’s hoodie I don’t recognize. Might turn something up. And then there’s this...”
Dave points at a gold owl no more than two feet tall that lays at the side of the body.
“Murder weapon. Gold plated, maybe bronze. Either way it’s not my area. Point is, that’s your murder weapon.”
Rachel takes a pen from her pocket and turns the owl over.
“Nice owl. May have been both the murder weapon and the reason for it.”
“Think the killer got in an argument with the vic over the owl?”
“Yeah but it seems odd to leave it here.”
“Could have gotten into an argument over it. Words exchanged gets physical....”
“...and the killer lashes out with the owl.”
“Killer then sees the harsh reality of what happened...”
“...runs. I remember covering it at school, the fight or flight reaction.”
“There’s a fight and the killer takes flight.”
“Well the owl isn’t when it lays here.. I’ll have the team check it for prints. See what turns up. Find the killer, we might I.D the vic.”
“I’ll take him back to the office. Do the tests, maybe find you some concrete results.”
“Meantime, I’m going to find me a security office. This place must be covered somehow. I may not find the murder, probably why it’s all went down in this corner, but it should show me the comings and goings. If you can get me an accurate time of death, it should help to narrow down my time starring at the CCTV.”
“I’ll get onto that. I wish that one day everybody was good. Just for a change.”
“I don’t. Wrong as it is to stand over a body and say it, but hunting the bad people pays my wages and I have bills.”
Rachel turns on her heel and heads through more shallow puddles to the stairwell door.
